(On penalties hurting their field position)

“I’m not concerned about the penalties. We were penalized seven times in the game. In my opinion, we should have been penalized twice. I was upset after the ballgame but looking at the tape, those are incorrect calls. With that being said, we’ve got balls on the 16 (-yard line) instead of the 8 (-yard line) or the 10 (-yard line) instead of the 5 (-yard line) because the kicks are good. The penalties weren’t necessarily the big issue, it was the kicks. It was the placement of the kicks and the coverage unit, so that’s just kind of how the flow of the game goes. But the penalties, there were seven and in my opinion, five of them were incorrect calls. That would include the first defensive offsides – that was a false start. It was not a defensive offsides, it’s like ‘false start 101.’ You’ve got a third-and-12 and we’re called for offsides, so we now have a third-and-7 and they convert. If it’s called correctly, you have a third-and-17. Third-and-17s are hard to convert. We would most likely have a three-and-out and get the ball back. Instead, they go down and score on their first drive. Looking at the tape, it’s different than it would appear. We felt last night, I thought I was disappointed in the special teams’ performance, but looking at the tape they got better than they did last week and they were pretty good last week because those penalties should not be called. It’s just kind of how the game went. There were some other incidences where there should have been some things called against our opponent that were not called that could have created some situations for us. The intentional grounding was missed. There were a couple other things that were missed. But, again we had chances, we need to make plays. By no means am I placing blame. I have great respect for the officiating department and the officials. We work very close with them and we move on. We had chances in that ballgame. We had chances to get off the field, chances to make plays – didn’t make them.”

(On if he doesn’t think the special teams penalties should have been called)

“In my opinion, yes, they should not have been called.”

(On how the officials made the wrong call against DE Chris Long’s offsides penalty)

“It’s the human element in the game. There are calls that are going to be missed every week, that’s part of it. Our department’s doing the best job they can. They’re under great leadership in (NFL Vice President of Officiating) Dean (Blandino) and I think we’re clearly going in the right direction with the department, but there’s a mistake every once in a while.”

(On how young players bounce back from penalties called on them that should not have been called)

“I talked to them this morning, showed it to them. That’s why on the sideline you have to be careful unless you see it, unless I see the act… For example a couple weeks ago, we had a taunting or we had a late hit where you can actually see it. If you don’t see it, you just have to roll with the punches and move on and wait until you see the tape.”

(On how a penalty keeping a drive alive can set the tone for the game)

“Again it remains to be seen. We think it’s significant. Now, granted we’ve got to get a third-and-17 stop, but you get a third-and-17 stop, should you give up a 10-yard pass, you get off the field and get the ball back. You’re also talking about field position and a young punt returner that’s not backed up with his heels on the 8-yard line who’s got a chance to put his hands on the ball. You can look at every single play in the game and say, ‘What if?’ But, the bottom line is that we fell behind, we’ve had two interceptions in two weeks returned for touchdowns and regardless of the situational circumstance, certainly can’t blame it on the quarterback, but it happened. It’s hard to win games when you give up defensive scores.”

(On which two penalties he thought were correct)

“We agree with (C) Scott’s (Wells) holding, and then we had an illegal motion false start – which you talk about a young team in a loud environment, and have no line of scrimmage infractions with the exception of the motion. I was pleased with that. In addition to 55 pass attempts…when your gross passing yards are the same as your net passing yards, you’re doing a good job protecting your quarterback.”

(On his thoughts of running a no-huddle offense more often)

“No. We did it because we got behind. We have done it, obviously, early in the ball game. But, you do it early in the ball game against a guy like Matt Ryan and go three-and-out you’ve got problems. You’re putting him back on the field all the time. You look at Sam’s 300-plus yards passing games over his career, they’ve won two. We have the ability to do it and there’s a time do to it and a time not to do it. If you put a long drive together, you’ve got the defense tired, and you go back on the field you want to continue to fatigue the defense through it. But, we had plenty of time. All we had to do was get a defensive stop, and we had plenty of time to tie the ball game up.”

(On no-huddle and hurry-up)

“There’s a difference between a no-huddle and a hurry-up. Typical your hurry-up is the end of the half or the end of the game where you’re in a hurry to try to – it’s a two-minute offense. The no-huddle’s a little bit different as we perceive it. We went strictly to the hurry-up yesterday because we knew we weren’t going to have the possessions. In normal offense administration, we wouldn’t have the number of possessions to catch up.”

(On how much play clock you use in the no-huddle/hurry-up)

“Teams are going to no-huddle, get up on the ball and snap the ball like Matt did with five seconds left to go on the play clock. In the hurry-up, you’re snapping it with 15-20 seconds.”

(On RT Rodger Saffold’s status)

“We’ll have more information on Wednesday. Right now he’s day-to-day. (S) Matt’s (Daniels) going to require season-ending surgery at some point this week. Difficult for Matt, having worked so hard to come off the ACL (surgery) and to have this thing happen is difficult for him, but he’ll bounce back. He’s a tough young man.”

(On the Rams’ pass coverage against the Falcons)

“Could be better. We had breakdowns, which we talked about yesterday. We could be better on third down. We got our hands on some balls. There were some positives there. I thought (LB) Alec (Ogletree) did a nice job on a very, very talented tight end (Tony Gonzalez), made a play, broke a pass up the second play of the game against (Steven) ‘Jack’ (Jackson) on a crossing route. We did some good things, but we’ve got to get better.”

(On if he’s getting enough out of the running game)

“Yeah. We didn’t have a chance to do much of it because we got behind. I think the running game needs to get better, but as it was the first couple weeks, yeah.”

(On WR Austin Pettis’ game against Atlanta)

“He does those things on the practice field. Like we talked about last week, (TE Jared) ‘Cookie’ (Cook) has a big day, so all of a sudden attention goes to him. So, other people have to step up as did Austin and (WR) Chris (Givens). They got their opportunities.”

(On if felt any different about Cook’s performance after watching film of the game)

“No.”

Postgame Quotes – Rams vs Cardinals

RamsCardinals

Rams Head Coach Jeff Fisher

(On his favorite part of the game)

“Watching the game clock tick to zero. That’s my most favorite part. You know, we’re really excited. You take them when you get them like that. We were very excited to be able to open the season with a win here at home against a divisional opponent, but we have a long way to go. The staff was talking this week about feeling pretty good about where we are, but really realistically with the new players and the youth of the football team, we were looking forward to getting into this ballgame to see which direction we have to go and what we have to address. So there’s a lot of errors that we have to address, but most of those are just the self-inflicting wounds, just the penalties. I mean, ‘Cookie’ (TE Jared Cook) he’s got a running 40 to the end zone. You’ve got to remind him every so often that you always have to carry that ball high and tight because you never know when something’s going to happen. So it’s the little things like that that we can get corrected. We do that, then we’ve got a chance to win some games.”

(On if the goal of the last possession was to get the ball close enough for K Greg Zuerlein to kick the field goal)

“Obviously, we thought we’d have a chance to get a first down on the crack toss, but if for some reason the ball’s incomplete and they’ve got a time out there might be a different ending there because he calls time out on the sack. We were in field goal range. We wanted to get him to use his timeout and get the first down then we run it down to one second and kick it and we’re home. But that was the thought process there, was yeah, trust our kicker and win the ballgame for us.”

(On DE Robert Quinn’s performance)

“It was an exceptional job. We thought that they were going to try to get the tackle some help, and they did at times, and when they did he was able to take advantage of it. He made big plays when we needed them.”

(On finally recovering a fumble)

“Yeah in the game we had the special teams fumble that we don’t get. We get the first fumble that we don’t get and you start thinking, ‘Oh boy, one of these has got to bounce our way,’ and then we open the half and their defensive tackle scores an interception for a touchdown. So now you know you’re going to have to go make some plays.”

(On the importance of winning the first game of the season)

“Well it is. There’s nothing better than watching the game after a win, especially with a young football team and early in the season, that’s what you do because we have to get a lot of these things corrected. It’s getting obvious, I mean we’re going to have some great battles with the Cardinals. He’s (Cardinals Head Coach Bruce Arians) done a great job there. (Cardinals QB) Carson Palmer is the real deal. This is a much improved football team.”

(On Cook’s performance)

“Near perfect, with the exception. That’s why he’s here. We’ve got an accurate passer that can find him and he can make plays with the ball. He’s outstanding. Again, one of the many self-inflicted wounds that we had in this ballgame going in the end zone.”

(On what Cook could have done different on the fumble)

“No, just protect it. I think he assumed he was going to score.”

(On Arizona’s pressure)

“Yeah, they’re very talented. They’re a pressure-oriented defense. It’s a good front. We’re three games now in a row, if you go back to last year, without a sack. That’s a credit to the offensive line, but also a credit to Sam and his teammates to get in the right place in the right time and Sam getting rid of the football.”

(On QB Sam Bradford’s fourth quarter performance)

“Great job. He’s got a good feel for our offense and made the throws and made the conversion. Turned himself into a running back there for the two-point conversion.”

(On if Bradford’s run on the two-point conversion was a called play)

“It’s a called play, yeah. He’s got options. That’s common in the game, but I don’t think they expectead that out of him.”

Rams QB Sam Bradford

(On how nice it is to have TE Jared Cook on offense)

«It’s great. Obviously, he made some huge plays for us out there today. We’ve seen him do it all training camp, so I don’t think it surprised anyone, and I expect him to keep playing like that. He’s going to help us tremendously this year.»

(On if it was important for him to go right back to Cook after his fumble on the goal line in the first quarter)

«Absolutely, and that’s what I told him. We came to the sideline and I said, ‘Hey bro, be ready because it’s coming right back to you.’ Yeah, I thought he did a great job because it would have been really easy for him to get down right there, but he showed a ton of maturity and confidence coming back and playing the way he did after that.»

(On how he would describe the win)

«Crazy. There were so many ups and downs in this game. We had so many opportunities to score and didn’t. Then, go down after the turnover. I think it says a lot about the guys in this locker room. For a young team to endure some of the things we did today, I’m so proud of those guys. No one ever lost their cool. We knew that if we went out there and kept executing, things would start to go our way and sure enough they did.»

(On if scoring the game’s final 14 points when they were down by 11 shows the maturity of the team)

«Absolutely. I think, just like I said, it would have been real easy for this team, as young as we are, to get down after going down 11 – the first game at home. But, the mood on the sideline never changed. The confidence, nothing ever left us. We knew that we were the ones stopping ourselves and that if we went out there and executed things were going to be OK.»

(On if Arizona pressured as much as they anticipated)

«They brought quite a bit of pressure tonight. It’ll be interesting to see what the percentage was when we turn the tape on, but that’s something we were expecting.»

(On if they expected the Arizona linebackers to be right up on the line of scrimmage)

«Yeah.»

(On how the offensive line played in the win)

«I can’t say enough about those guys up front. They played outstanding today, and I think it shows that we’ve taken leaps and bounds from where we were last year. I thought the communication between myself and the line – I thought (C) Scott (Wells) did a great job of getting things solved. They threw some looks at us, especially on third down, that we hadn’t seen in the preseason and those guys didn’t flinch at all. They kept doing their jobs, kept me protected, and allowed us to make some plays towards the end of the game.»

(On if this win is an example of the progress the team has made with talent that he can make mistakes and still win)

“Absolutely. I think in the past people looked at us…we had to play pretty close to perfect to win a game, especially a game like this. We blew so many opportunities today. Obviously, the turnover giving them the seven points didn’t help. I think it shows we’ve got a lot to correct, but with the guys we have in this locker room now there’s no doubt that we can overcome that.”

(On if the Cardinals trying to cover WR Chris Givens’ deep threat opened up other options)

“Exactly. Obviously, with the big plays that Givens was able to create in the preseason we knew that they were going to come out and obviously be a little scared of that. I thought that they played a little soft over him tonight, tried to take away those shots, but it just opened up everything underneath.”

(On if it was surprising to him that this was the first time TE Jared Cook ever had more than one touchdown in a game)

“That’s really surprising. A guy with his talent, his ability, for this to be his first game with two touchdowns, that’s almost shocking. Hopefully this is the first of many multiple touchdown games for him.”

(On if that QB run is going to be part of the offense now)

“Yeah, how’d you guys like that? That was pretty good, huh? That was pretty good. I think they had no idea that I was going to run the ball on that play and I think that’s why it worked so well. But hey, we’ll take what they give us.”

(On what he thought of DE Robert Quinn’s play today)

“Oh man, extremely happy that him and (DE) Chris (Long) aren’t lining up opposite of me. We had to face them every day in training camp, those two guys are as good a tandem as there is.”

(On if there was a read option in the game plan)

“Yeah I think so. I think we were saving that for Week 2, so you guys keep your eyes out for that one.”

(On if the tipped interception for a touchdown was a fluke)

“Yeah, obviously you’d like to try to maneuver it around him somehow so he doesn’t get his hand on it, but things like that happen. Unfortunately it did today and it resulted in seven points for them and that’s just something I’ve got to get cleaned up to make sure it doesn’t happen again if we run a naked boot.”

(On how RB Daryl Richardson played today)

“I thought Daryl did great today. Like I said, I think they threw a lot of different looks at us. I think he showed that he has matured a lot since last year, both in his ability to run the football and to pick up blitzes. I’m extremely proud of him and I’m excited for what this year is going to be for him.”

Rams TE Jared Cook

(On how feels about his first game as a Ram)

“I’m happy we got the win, so that’s what matters. We came out with a ‘W’. We made it a lot harder than it should have been. But, we came out with a ‘W’, that’s all that matters.”

(On if this type of start was what he had in mind this season)

“Most definitely. Coach ‘Schotty’ (Offensive Coordinator Brian Schottenheimer) he did a heck of a job. There’s a lot of guys on this offense that contributed – it was awesome.”

(On how he rebounded after fumbling early in the game)

“That’s never something you want to happen. I wish I could have that one back and I still wish I could have it back after that type of game. It’s just a battle of mistakes that you come back from. It’s part of the game. He made a good play. It’s just part of the game, you’ve got to bounce back from it and come back stronger.”

(On how good the team can be this year)

“I’ve been saying it all offseason, this could be a great team. We’ve got something special going on in this locker room and in this organization. So, as long as we know what we can accomplish and put our minds to it, there shouldn’t be anybody that can stop us. We have a great team and organization here.”

(On QB Sam Bradford running the offense)

“Sam did a great job. He kept his composure the whole time. He put everybody on his back and on his shoulders, and he carried us to victory. The O-line did a great job protecting him today as well, so hats off to him.”

Rams DE Robert Quinn

(On Chris Long calling him a freakish athlete)

“I was just going out there trying to perform, trying to help this team win. If Chris says I’m a freakish athlete, I’ll take it. Same thing to him, Chris is definitely a great athlete himself. I’m glad to have him on the other side, and with (DEs) William (Hayes) and Eugene (Sims) on the team.”

(On staying motivated despite adversity in the game)

“We get a lot of energy, not just from yourself, but from your teammates rooting you on and stuff like that. You want to win, so you’ve got that extra motivation going, so you just keep pushing no matter how tired you are. When you’re performing well, that helps a lot also.”

(On if the Cardinals started to defend him differently)

“I was definitely starting to get chipped a lot more, but I just tried to work my craft, get around the corner, and take inside moves. You can’t let it slow down your fastball. You’ve just got to keep going out there trying to make plays.”

(On his personal style of play)

“I like to credit myself as a pretty fast end, so I like the speed rush of course, as I’m sure y’all can tell. I’ve been working … my pass rush moves, and I’m happy I got three (sacks) today. We’ll see how the rest of the season goes.”

Rams CB Cortland Finnegan

(On his personal foul penalties)

“I just can’t do that. I’ve got it all out of my system. We’ve got 15 more (games), you won’t get another one out of me. You don’t want to hurt the team. I did that today. I’m glad we got a win. You’ve just got to learn from that.”

(On if the Arizona Cardinals are better than last year)

“They’re a more dynamic team with the offensive coordinator and (QB Carson) Palmer back there. Their strength is receivers, we said that all week and you saw that. All of the receivers had about 80 yards receiving. (Larry) Fitz(Gerald) was the only one to get into the endzone, so we just tried our best to limit what he could do.”

(On how QB Carson Palmer improves the Cardinals Offense)

“He can make all the throws. He’s just another elite quarterback in the NFL. You’ve got to pick your poison. Sometimes we have to move coverage and everything. Everyone including myself wanted to play better today.”

Rams DE Chris Long

(On the team winning despite mistakes)

“Well it shows we can be good. It certainly shows today that we were good enough to win. That is saying something as many times as we shot ourselves in the foot. Like Coach Fish(er) says, it’s all about keeping perspective whether we win or we lose. One or two plays different and we feel miserable in here. We have to just rate the way we played, break it down, and see how it is.”

(On DE Robert Quinn)

“I’ve been saying he’s (DE Robert Quinn) is a top 5 … eventually a top 3 pass rusher. He’s as dangerous as anybody in the league. He’s just going to continue to show it, and it’s scary how good he can be.”

(On overcoming adversity)

“We’re better if we’ve been through the fire. We better get this stuff out of our system early. We don’t want to do this in Week 10. Hats off to Arizona. They’re a lot better ball club than they were last year, and it showed. (QB) Carson (Palmer) made a big difference for them, and on defense they’re still pretty tough. We’re going to have to see them again, and we’re going to have to play a lot better to beat them next time. I just think we’re a tough team. Today, we just beared down. We were talking on the sidelines and said if we can’t overcome this adversity, we’re not going to be worth much. That was big for us to overcome that, and that’s a start.”

Rams WR Tavon Austin

(On how he feels)

“I’m definitely feeling good. We got the win, that’s all that matters. I’m just glad a lot of the players on the defensive side, offensive side made plays today and contributed to the win – that’s all that matters today.”

(On being active on the offense)

“I made a couple big plays deep, a couple first downs to set us up for scores. I’m just thankful that (QB) Sam (Bradford) and the coaches believed in me and I was able to come up with the plays.”

(On not playing the last punt smart and letting it go for a touchback)

“When it came off his foot, it was kind of a hard ball to read. It was kind of like a knuckle ball, so I just played my chances. At the end of the day, I knew I could have blocked if it was getting close to it and that’s what I did.”

(On Bradford in the huddle)

“Pretty much, he just keeps calm and puts us in the right position to make plays – that’s all he did.”

Head Coach Jeff Fisher – Press Conference

Fisher_190813

(On if conditioning after practice was to get extra work in)

“No. During the preseason, it’s kind of a reward for being penalized in the game. That’s how we kind of emphasize the penalties.”

(On how S Matt Daniels did against Green Bay on Saturday)

“Matt didn’t play much. We didn’t intend on having him play more than a series, and he did a few things on special teams. But, he’s back. It was really good to see him move around. He moved around real well, and did some good things in the limited time that he was out there.”

(On WR Tavon Austin’s absence from practice)

“He’s excused for personal reasons today.”

(On how the use of personnel changes in the third game of the preseason)

“Were going to continue to add reps. There’s a good chance everybody will play up to have time now dependent on the number of plays. This typically is a bigger game for everybody across the league. There’s a little bit more planning involved. We’ll give them some more things. We’ll equip them with more things during the week. Obviously, it’s quite a challenge when you’re facing (Broncos QB) Peyton Manning. We’ll have to give our defense a chance to line up and try to get off the field.”

(On if RB Daryl Richardson will start against the Broncos this Saturday)

“I don’t know. What’s today? Monday? Yeah.”

(On if they are flipping starters at running back)

“Yeah. We want to continue to try to get some of the younger players some quality reps earlier in the game just for evaluation sake.”

(On if he’ll game plan more for a game against Manning)

“We’ll select some things that will give them a chance. It’s not a full blown game plan type of thing, but I think we’ll do a little bit more from a preparation standpoint.”

(On if the starting running back job is more clear defined at this point in the preseason)

“Basically from a starting standpoint, yeah, I think Daryl would probably take the first snap against Arizona. But, as far as who’s going to come in, that remains to be seen. We still have some more evaluating to do.”

(On what he wants to see coming into the third preseason game)

“What we just finished right there – is minimize the penalties, those penalties that have nothing to do with the play, the pre-snap penalties and so on. We need to tackle better. We’ve got to get our return game going. We’ve got to get the ball in the end zone. We’ve got to get used to doing that.”

(On what he wants to see out of the running backs competing for the No. 2 and No. 3 spots)

“It’s consistency, and it’s not just the game. It’s consistency on the practice field, understanding, first and foremost, probably how to play without the football. For us, that’s more important than how he plays with the football. By that I mean, is getting to the right place in the passing game? Is he proficient, and does he know exactly what to do in protection? Once you get that down, then we’ll evaluate the run skills.”

(On if special teams is important for backup running backs)

“It’s a bonus. It gives them an opportunity to be active, and that’s important. There’s plenty of spots open in our core group of special teams right now. If a running back wants to step in there and take one of those spots, that would be great.”

(On if he is getting enough effort out of guys trying to make the team)

“Yeah, we’re getting great effort out of everybody. Effort’s not an issue. Effort here, effort in the walk-thru, effort in the preseason games has been outstanding.”

(On if their game plan has been more ‘vanilla’ than both opponents thus far in the preseason)

“I’d say probably so. Yeah.”

(On if it bothers him)

“No, it bothers you guys. It doesn’t bother me. We’ve got a regular season we’re concerned about.”

(On if it is harder to judge players with a ‘vanilla’ game plan)

“We’re throwing it and we’re handing it off. It’s just I’d like to think we’d be a little bit more creative when the season starts.”

(On C Scott Wells and S Darian Stewart not practicing)

“We just backed down on Scott. Darian, we’re doing some tests. After the game I had made the comment that the training room was empty. Darian’s hamstring, he complained of some soreness. He came out of the game, so we’re doing some tests just to make sure it’s OK.”

(On who the starting kick returner is)

“We’re going to continue to give (WR) Tavon (Austin) opportunities on the punts. I’m not convinced I’m going to use him on kickoffs, so we’re still auditioning for that position.”

(On RT Rodger Saffold’s shoulder injury)

“We’re still doing tests. He’s a little sore. He’s going to miss some time. He may miss a preseason game or two. But, I think we’ll have him back here in a couple weeks.”

(On if Saffold’s return will require getting strength back in his shoulder)

“Yeah. It’s going to be sore. Specifically, it subluxed, it was dislocated, came out backwards. So we got it right back in place. He’s very sore. In these instances there’s going to be some swelling, some pain and you just have to work through that and then re-strengthen that. You just want to make sure the integrity of the joint is OK and based on all indications it is. We’re lucky.”

(On how RT Joe Barksdale did filling in Saffold’s role in Thursday night’s game)

“Joe did fine. He did fine. When Joe played last year, a couple games, he did well. Joe’s lining up against some good defensive ends here at practice every day and he got on the field and did well – knew what to do. We’re totally comfortable with Joe doing that.”

(On how Saffold’s time out of practice will affect his development in switching from left to right tackle)

“He’s really had a good camp. He’s doing well out there. A lot of it is footwork. A lot it is understanding the stuff taking place inside the meeting room. It’ll be a setback, but I don’t think it’s going to hurt him. He’s a smart guy and he and (RG) Harvey (Dahl) are working real well together. We’ll get him back as soon as we can.”

(On how the starting offensive line played on Thursday night)

“I thought they did a good job. Unfortunately, if we don’t put the ball on the ground I think you look at the offense and say, ‘Had a pretty good day’ considering what we were up against and the type of things we were getting out of them. (QB) Sam (Bradford)’s third down completion to (WR) Chris (Givens) – there’s eight guys and gaps and overload blitzing and Sam hung in there and made the play. I thought overall the first group did good. (LT) Jake (Long) was good. Jake and (LG) Chris (Williams) did well together. I thought (C) Scott (Wells) was good. Considering we didn’t do a lot of game planning, I thought they handled things pretty well.”

(On if there’s any kind of agreement between opposing head coaches before preseason game to disclose what kinds of things they plan on working on throughout the game)

“No there’s not, and the league frowns on it and we just play. Sometimes you prepare for the worst and then if it’s a basic, vanilla-type approach defensively based on your opponent then so be it. We looked at things, we just didn’t work them on the field. Looked at a lot of tape and anticipated some things. That gave us a chance.”

(On never knowing what the opposing teams will show in preseason games)

“You don’t, no. But what you do in at least the first week you carry in enough to where if you need to draw on some things you can. We were prepared to max protect. We did quite a bit in the second half. That means you’re not getting a lot of people out in routes. It means sometimes it’s difficult on the quarterback. I think you saw that as the case with (QB) Austin (Davis) – where we’re keeping people in because they’re bringing people from all over. He’s only got a couple options down the field. As a result, there’s an aborted play here and there. At the end of the day, you want to keep your quarterback from getting hit during the preseason.”

(On how the offense picked up blitzes)

“I thought our backs did a good job. Tight ends were involved in it, and we didn’t have any glaring mistakes. Late in the game, we had a couple things go on with the offensive line, but that’s typical when you’re playing guys that haven’t been in the system very long. But, just overall my thoughts on the game itself – we got a lot of good work from the standpoint of two-minute drives, those kinds of things on both sides of the ball. We put our defense in some difficult situations on third down to see if they could make some plays. We, obviously, gave up the one touchdown pass. But, when you sit back and look at all three phases – the offense, defense, and special teams – there’s a lot of things to learn from, a lot of mistakes to correct. As coaches you would rather have it that way than the other way where you play a perfect and you just move on to the next one. Overcoming a punt return for a touchdown and why that happened. I think it’s important that the young guys understand that we have rules and responsibilities and we have coverage lanes and we have guys that have to contain and guys that have to go to their landmarks, and when you don’t this is what happens. In addition to that, we had a long punt with no hang time. (P) John’s (Hekker) been hitting it very, very well, but he just cut one loose and that’s what happens when you bang one like that.”

(On not wanting to punt to the middle of the field)

“Correct. If you’re going to go that long with no hang time, it’s got to go out of bounds. But, he comes back with a 5.0 hang time and a 50-yard punt, you saw what happened – it was a catch and an immediate tackle. So, he’s been punting very well, but it’s those kinds of things. We can’t have that ball in our opener against that returner, so a lot of good things to learn from.”

(On how RB Isaiah Pead responded after his fumble)

“He did. I think he shook it off and he ran well. Considering the opportunities that he had, he made plays. He hit the trap good, he found daylight slightly off the point of attack on a trap, which is a very instinctive move for a young runner, which is good to see.”

(On rookie RBs Benny Cunningham and Zac Stacy)

“They got carries and they ran hard. And we’re going to continue to give them carries. As I said, our hope is to try to get them some carries behind the starting offensive line over the next couple weeks to fairly evaluate them.”

(On if expectations about the season will change after the loss and injury to Saffold)

“It’s the first preseason game, so if expectations are affected just based on the production or lack of production the first preseason game, my recommendation would be just be patient.”

(On WR Chris Givens progress in running intermediate distance routes)

“Yeah, he’s doing that on the practice field and didn’t have a lot of opportunities last night, but he knew what was going on. It was a really good adjustment, it was a fine throw. We have to try to get the ball in the hands of other people. (WR) Tavon (Austin) had one opportunity – tough catch but it was a great throw, should have made that catch. So, we want to get him involved more so in the offense.”

(On TE Jared Cook not being targeted often)

“It’s just the way it is – it just happens. When you’re going to play your starters, however many, 12 to 15 to 18 plays, it’s hard to get everybody a couple targets and/or catches and still hand the ball off. It’s just wishful thinking.”

(On the coaching staff involving around 80 players throughout the game)

“I thought from an operations standpoint – substitution, play calling and everything – I thought we did a good job. And I’m talking about the entire staff and the players because you have to put the responsibility on them. We had one situation where we had 10 guys on the field on an extra point and it was after the punt return for touchdown, and a couple of guys that were supposed to be on had just been told that they were done playing. So, we’ll take that responsibility, but it’s quite a challenge when you have that many players playing.”

(On if he was pleased with how the team handled the National Anthem)

“They did fine. Did you notice?”

(On if he would have gone for the 2-point conversion had they scored a touchdown at the end of the game)

“Yes, of course. You play these games to try to win and two points at least gets you into overtime, and you get to keep playing your young players.”

(On his thoughts and awareness of the ‘smack cam’ game the players are involved in)

“Yeah, I was aware of it. I just wanted to make sure it stayed under control, that it didn’t get out of control. But he (DE Chris Long) says it’s pretty much over? If I was (CB) Cortland (Finnegan), I would have my head on a swivel. He (Long) said it’s pretty much over. I think he’s taking advantage of his relationship with you to get back at Cort.”

(On if there will be enough footballs to go around to all his receivers)

“I think we’ll find enough. It’s been fun to watch these guys work together. We had a really good start in the spring. Obviously, I guess they had some great work out in Norman (Oklahoma) with (QB) Sam (Bradford). Then, really they picked up where they left off. It’s been a good start for the first couple of days. It’s good to see the guys playing fast and having fun.”

(On the challenge he faces in trying to get everyone involved in the offense)

“I think honestly, if we just design good plans and the guys work hard and know what they’re doing, the ball’s going to get spread around – that’s the key. Sam’s got to read his progressions. The ball’s going to go to the open guy. You get in trouble when you’re limited and you try to force a ball to a guy or two, but when you have multiple weapons, the ball gets spread around pretty good.”

(On where he expects the run/pass ratio to be this season)

“I think everything here is built on running the football. We feel good about the backs we’ve got here, Isaiah (Pead), Daryl (Richardson), good pick up with Zac Stacy. He’s having a good camp. Again, we know you have the run the football in this league, especially in this division.”

(On if he’s ever had as much speed at receiver as he has this year)

“Probably not. We had a team back with the Jets that was pretty fast with Santonio Holmes and Braylon Edwards and those guys, but this is probably the fastest unit I’ve been around. The thing that’s been fun is you not only have a fast group but a group that is really buying into the details, the angle of the releases, the splits, stuff like that. A good passing game is one that’s detail oriented. These guys have done a good job of that.”

(On Bradford’s performance in camp)

“He’s doing good. I think he’s having fun. I know he feels like he started off the spring well but got even better. I know he feels like he’s hitting his stride now. It’s been fun to get the pads on today. That was fun to watch these guys compete, but he’s very comfortable.”

(On how different the offensive line looks with T Jake Long’s addition)

“There’s a lot of pieces. The guys are working together. Obviously, Jake’s done a nice job. Rodger (Saffold) moving over to right (tackle) has been terrific. Having (C) Scott Wells back and healthy, they’re playing well together. It’s going to be fun to watch those guys. We get great work every day in practice going against our front four. That is just a dog fight every day, so it’s been fun to watch those guys compete against each other.”

(On if Saffold’s position change has been a smooth one)

“In the spring there were some growing pains I think, but he’s come back and he obviously worked extremely hard over the break. He’s really looked good at right tackle in training camp these four days.”

(On who will get first priority for WR Tavon Austin – the offense or special teams)

“Well, obviously, there’s plenty of touches for him. We have big plans for him on offense and big plans for him on ‘teams.’ Again, he’ll have to be in good shape, which he is.”

(On if Austin will be seen playing running back)

“We’re going to try to keep people off balance with different things. We’re going to try to move him around. If he’s easier to find, it makes it easier for them to double him. If you move him around, they’ve got to work to double him, so that’s a big part of it.”

(On TE Lance Kendricks missing practices and how much of a setback that is)

“He’s done a great job in the meetings. He’s just been really dialed in, second year in the system does help. Again, all he can do is watch and he’s out there making calls and paying attention, stuff like that. I don’t think it’s a setback. I think what he’s going to have to do is once he gets healthy and ready to go, he’s just going to have to work a little bit extra harder. We have no concerns about him in that regard.”

(On the development of TEs Cory Harkey and Mike McNeill)

“I’ll tell you what, we’ve got great depth. Obviously, having ‘Cookie’ (Jared Cook) helps, certainly, but you watch Corky Harkey, you watch a guy that’s undrafted out of UCLA, came in here and missed most of the spring last year and came in for training camp, finally we got him out on the field late in the year. (He’s) having a great camp. Mike McNeill is a guy, obviously, who is a match-up problem. So, we’re splitting some of those reps around, but we also have some other guys that are stepping up as well. Cameron Graham is making some plays. So, that’s going to be a fun room to watch as the competition boils through the preseason.”

(On if he can already envision WR Brian Quick having a bigger role and if he has noticed his development from his rookie year to now)

“Yeah, I do. The one thing that ‘Quickie’ has, he’s big and he can run. The other guys all come in different shapes and sizes, but he is consistently the one big guy that can really run and stretch the field. He’s making a lot of plays for us down the field, so that’s fun to see.”

(On if he began reinstalling the playbook at the start of training camp)

“Yes, a few days back. We always do that. I think it’s a great philosophy that (Head) Coach (Jeff Fisher) has. We kind of give it all to them in the spring, when the ‘rooks’ (are) here, when they come back, and then when the ‘vets’ are here. So today is actually a review day for us. We’re in the fourth practice and we’ve got three installs, so we just started all over again.”

(On if the retention of the playbook installations have been good)

“Excellent.”

(On G/C Barrett Jones practicing today)

“It was fun. He sailed one snap to the left, which we gave him a hard time about, but we certainly don’t worry about his ability to snap. It was fun to see him out there. Another guy that did a great job knowing that he had to get healthy before he could get out there, but he’s certainly ready, knows the system and is taking charge out there.”
